Why I’m Supporting Dr. Ken Hemphill For SBC President

Hey guys.  Brad Whitt here and I want to take just a minute to share with you why I’m so very excited next week to travel with my 6-year-old Benjamin to Dallas to the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention to vote for my friend, Dr. Ken Hemphill for president.  I’ve known Bro. Ken for years, not just as a leader of a large influential leading evangelistic church but also as president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, leader of the EKG task force, and serving now at North Greenville University.

But looking back on my life, I guess the main thing that I remember is the time that I was a young pastor in South Carolina and Dr. Ken reached out to me.  I never will forget it.  Here was the former president of Southwestern Seminary reaching out to me, asking if he could invest in my, could he encourage me?  And I had the privilege for an entire year to meet every month with 11 other pastors and Dr. Ken where he poured into us, where he invested in us, where he encouraged us, where he introduced us to other leading pastors like Dr. Don Wilton and Dr. Jim Henry.  And when I look back upon that year, that year is a year that molded me, and really made me in a lot of ways, the pastor that I am today.

When I think about what our denomination needs right now, it needs a man, a stable statesman who knows us from the ground up all the way – small churches, big churches, denominational work.  We need a man like my friend, Dr. Ken Hemphill.  In addition to that, we have the benefit, the blessing of the fact that his precious wife, Mrs. Paula, can travel with him, to be alongside of him as he travels around our denomination and to really invest in it and encourage our ladies as well.

So, I just really can’t think of a better combo, a better pair than the Hemphill’s to serve our denomination in these turbulent days that we face.  And so I just wanted to come today and to share with you, I’m planning on next week, travelling to Dallas to vote for my friend, Ken Hemphill, and I just want to encourage you to pray about that, and maybe the Lord will lead you to vote for him next week as well.  I look forward to seeing you next week in Dallas!
