Devotional Thought – The Light Of The Lord’s Life

Devotional Thought – The Light Of The Lord’s Life

“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” John 1:4

The light of Jesus has illumined the entire world, not by what He has done, but by what He was – “His life was the light of men.” We often speak of the “life’s work” of a man, but Jesus’ life’s work was His life.

When I want to get light from other men, I read their books or listen to their works, but when I want to get light from Jesus, I simply look to Him. As odd as it might sound, it is not so much what He says that I treasure – as great as that is – I treasure Him. You see, the Sermon on the Mount is amazing, but the sermon’s Preacher is even more amazing.

Some say that the first Easter morning revealed Jesus’ glory, but I believe the opposite to be true. I believe that it was His glory that actually revealed the first Easter morning. It’s not the resurrection that made Jesus, it is Jesus that has made the resurrection. For those who have seen His beauty, even the Mount of Olives can do nothing to add to their conviction. The light of immortality is just as bright on His cross as it is on His crown.

Jesus said of Himself, “I am the resurrection and the life.” He didn’t say, “I teach the resurrection,” or “I bring about the resurrection,” or “I predict that there will be a resurrection.” He said, “I am.” For Him is was almost beside the point to say, “In my Father’s house are many mansions,” because His life should be enough light all by itself. That’s why He said, “If it were not so, I would have told you.”

Do you worry about tomorrow or fret about the future? Are you looking for a proof of Jesus among the stars of the sky or even the angels of Heaven? If so, you’re looking too far.  It is His life, not His works, that will be your light.

What proves that Spring has arrived? Is it the buds or the blossoms? Is it the birds or the bees? No, it is the warmth of the sun on your face and the fresh breath in your lungs.  That’s why no man can find the pearly gates that lead to everlasting life simply by searching. There is no way through those gates except through the one who claimed to be “the way, the truth and the life.” It is through His life that we have life. So, do you find that the pearly gates are dim to your sight? Don’t attempt to adjust your focus. Forget about the gate and look on Him, because He is the door, He is the way, and He is the light of life.

Thank you for this post. I needed my thinking switched this morning, off of myself and onto my Savior. Love this thought: “Some say that the first Easter morning revealed Jesus’ glory, but I believe the opposite to be true. I believe that it was His glory that actually revealed the first Easter morning. It’s not the resurrection that made Jesus, it is Jesus that has made the resurrection”

bobbiedilbeck, you picked the portion I find most compelling, too. I love that. Whenever I consider the glory of creation, praise is on my lips for the glory God creates for us, to enjoy. When I think of the Sabbath, and all the wonderful things we get to do to focus our attention on our LORD, He pours out rejuvenating restoration and refreshment. He made the day for us to rest and reboot in Him. Mondays seem to pale in comparison.

Brad, you never disappoint me. Your writing always points us toward the Savior and His glory. thanks. selahV
