19 Mar Devotional Thought – Refreshing Fire
“While I was musing, the fire burned…” Psalm 39:3
Have you ever stopped to consider the fact that if you would spend more time musing, or meditating, the fire of your soul would burn brighter and hotter? You see, it is because we spend so little time in meditation and reflection that we often have so little exhilaration and enthusiasm in our walk with the Lord. Why then, don’t you withdraw from the world to spend time with the Lord more often? If you were to do so you would soon discover that you would be better equipped to face the world because you would, in fact, be less worldly.
One of the most detrimental and devastating results of our non-stop, fast-paced, hectic and high-tech world is that we no longer make time to get alone with God. We don’t withdraw to spend time with Him. We don’t take the opportunity to reflect on His Word, will and working in our lives. That’s why we are so cold and calloused, and lack greatness even as other men consider greatness. If there were more of the fire of Heaven in our hearts we would have more power here on earth.
Is there no secret place where you can go to warm yourself? Is there no Holy of Holies where you can get a glimpse of the flame of God to strengthen your soul? Don’t forget, every thing that has been great and stirred the world hasn’t come from without, but from within. Doesn’t the Bible even say that as Jesus “prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering”? Yes; it was from His prayer that the power for His transfigured glory came. It was, in essence, the glow from His heart that shone on His face. It was when the Lord Jesus was musing that the fire burned!
Do you desire to see your life glorified, beautified and transfigured in the eyes of men? Then get up to the top of the mountain. Get alone with God in the secret place where the fires of His love burn bright. Climb to the crest of contemplation where you can catch the fresh breezes of Heaven; where the winds of the Spirit can fan the flame of your soul. Then your life will radiate gloriously to those down on the plain – and even more so because you will be unconscious of the glory of its shining. Your prayers will illuminate your face like Moses’ when he didn’t know that it shone so. Your words will burn, kindling the hearts of others like those who walked with the Lord to Emmaus. Your path will be lit by the Lord’s lamp as written by the Psalmist. It is when you have prayed in solitude as Elijah that you will catch a ride in a chariot of fire.
