How To Sit And “Soak In” A Worship Service

Recently I had the privilege I don’t often get to enjoy – attending a worship service with my family in which I didn’t have the responsibility of preaching or overseeing the service.. It was an odd and yet welcome experience for me.

As I sat there I begin to ask myself what I could do to get the most out of this opportunity.

I thought I’d share my thoughts – the thoughts of a pastor – with those who attend and are attentive during the worship services each weekend to help you get the most of your  worship time.

Arrive on time.

Or better yet, early!

Sit down front

Don’t be shy! You ask your congregation to sit there all of the time, after all.

Make yourself aware of the flow of the service.

Study the “bulletin or the worship guide, whatever they call it where you are from.”

Involve yourself in the worship by singing and praying.

It seems different when you aren’t in the pulpit, but worshipping the Lord is always good for the soul.

Interact with those around you.

Shake hands at the welcome time. Introduce yourself to your neighbors on the pew, and get to know your hosts.

Read along in your bible with the pastor.

Do everything you would expect from your own congregation.

Take notes

Dr. Rogers often said, “The weakest ink is stronger than the strongest mind.”

Pray specifically for yourself and others during the invitation.

Take advantage of the few times you aren’t the one extending the invitation.

Turn in a connect/guest/prayer card.

Let the pastor and his team know you were there, and pray for his church.

Go over the message with your family during lunch.

And ask your family what they thought of the service as well. You might just be surprised at what they learned, and you as well.
