“But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want.” Luke 15:14

Poor, pitiful prodigal. It was out of your excesses that the famine arose in your life. No doubt, the famine arose in that land, but it was your poverty that caused you to wallow in its devastating effects. Yes, there was enough food in the land to feed the pigs. The Psalmist promised that He would open His hand and “satisfy the desire of every living thing.” But, then you are not a living thing. You are a living soul!

All of creation would be nothing more than pig pods to you. All of the glory of earth’s kingdoms would be garbage to you. All of the excitement and entertainment the world could parade before you would still leave you lacking. Your demand will always exceed your supply. This is that which points to your immortality.

If this world were truly your land, you would face no famine. Your desperate desire is the announcement of God’s fullness in you. It is your most valuable and prized possession because it is your most precise prophecy. It shows that you are greater and destined for grander surroundings. What a fantastic famine!

Hunger and want are a rich revelation. Poverty points to infinite wealth. It was when I first felt the hunger of the heart that I was able to respond with complete confidence – “I will rise and go to my Father!”
